PARENT INFORMATION

Parent Duty

Being on kinder duty is a special part of your child’s kinder experience. The children love to show their family helper what they do at kinder. The kinder duty helper is also of great assistance to the kinder teachers and an essential and traditional part of the kinder program.

Who can undertake kinder duty?

Kinder duty can be performed by any adult representative from a child’s family. Often a parent will attend duty but grandparents, aunts or uncles or special friends capable of undertaking the basic tasks of kinder duty are welcome to attend.

How often will I be required to undertake kinder duty?

It is expected that each family will undertake 2 kinder duty sessions per term. Parents are asked to place themselves on the roster during kinder orientation and prior to the beginning of each term.

What if I can’t attend my rostered session?

If you can no longer attend your rostered session it is expected that you will arrange to swap with another parent and amend the roster accordingly. If you are unable to arrange for a replacement you must notify a teacher asap.

Role of the kinder duty helper?

Much of the kinder duty helper’s time can be spent enjoying activities with the children. The kinder duty helper will also assist with preparation for snack and/or lunch time by helping to pack up activities, wiping down tables, and setting up rubbish bowls on the tables. After snack and/or lunch the dishwasher is loaded, tables are wiped and floors swept by the kinder duty helper. The kinder observes strict guidelines to ensure high standards of hygiene. You will be advised on the use of colour coded cloths and cleaning products for the performance of these tasks. The teachers may also ask the kinder duty helper to assist with specific indoor or outdoor play activities arranged for that session. The helper should also sweep around the sandpit towards the end of the session.

The attendance record

It is a legal requirement that the kinder duty helper record their name in the attendance book together with the names of any siblings in attendance with the kinder duty helper. This also ensures that everyone is accounted for should an emergency evacuation be necessary.

Can I bring siblings?

The kinder duty helper and their child will often benefit most from the kinder duty experience if they can attend without the child’s siblings. However, we understand that this is often not possible and siblings are allowed to attend with the kinder duty helper provided that the kinder duty helper supervises that sibling closely at all times.
